Planning a trip to Ladakh

Ladakh is one of the most spectacular places on earth, and one of the highest. Plan for altitude first, sights second.

When to go

June to September is peak season, when the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways are usually open. Flights to Leh run year-round; winter brings frozen landscapes and the Chadar trek for experienced trekkers.

Fly or drive?

  • Fly to Leh for the quickest trip, but you arrive at about 3,500 m with no time to adjust, so rest for at least 36-48 hours.
  • Drive from Manali or Srinagar (2 days) for gradual acclimatisation and incredible scenery.

Permits

Permits are needed for Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri and other protected areas. Apply online through the Ladakh administration’s portal or through your hotel or a travel agent. Rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals: check before you go.

7-day itinerary (flying in)

Days 1-2 in Leh: rest, then Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace. Day 3, the monasteries: Thiksey, Hemis and Shey. Days 4-5, Nubra Valley over Khardung La: Diskit and the Hunder dunes. 6: Pangong Tso (via Shyok road). 7: Back to Leh.

Packing

Layers (it’s cold at night even in summer), sunscreen and sunglasses, lip balm, a reusable water bottle, cash and basic medicines.
