Domestic flights
India has a big, competitive domestic airline market (IndiGo and Air India are the largest). Flights are often the cheapest and fastest option for distances over about 600 km. Allow extra time for airport security, and check baggage allowances: they are lower than on international flights.
Trains
Great for routes like Delhi-Agra-Jaipur, Delhi-Varanasi and Mumbai-Goa. See our train guide.
App cabs and autos
- Uber, Ola and Rapido work in most cities; you need a working phone number.
- Auto-rickshaws: agree the fare first or use the meter where it’s enforced; apps also book autos.
- Airports and stations: use the prepaid taxi counter or the app pick-up zone.
Metros
Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Pune and other cities have metros: clean, cheap and air-conditioned. Many accept QR tickets via apps.
Hiring a car with a driver
For Rajasthan, Kerala or the hills, a car with driver is the most relaxing option. Book through a reputable agency or your hotel; daily rates usually include fuel and the driver’s costs, with tolls and parking sometimes extra. Agree the itinerary in writing.
Buses
State and private sleeper buses cover the whole country. Comfortable “Volvo” AC buses run Delhi-Manali, Bengaluru-Goa and similar routes. Book on major bus apps.
Self-drive
Possible with an International Driving Permit, but Indian traffic is challenging. Most visitors prefer a driver.
