Plan a perfect weekend trip in India

Long weekends are when half of India hits the road. A little planning makes the difference between a perfect getaway and five hours in a traffic jam.

Pick the right destination

Choose places within 4-6 hours of home: see getaways from Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.

Book smart

  • Trains: regular booking opens 60 days ahead; Tatkal opens a day before at 10:00 (AC) and 11:00 (non-AC). Online Tatkal needs Aadhaar authentication on your IRCTC account: set it up in advance.
  • Buses: overnight AC sleepers save a hotel night.
  • Flights: for longer weekends, book early and watch for sales.

Beat the crowds

  • Leave on Thursday night or very early Friday/Saturday morning.
  • Avoid the last day of a long weekend for the drive back: return early or a day late.
  • Pick lesser-known alternatives: Landour instead of Mussoorie Mall, Sattal instead of Nainital, Chikmagalur instead of Coorg.

Self-drive tips

FASTag for tolls, offline maps for the hills, and no night driving on mountain roads.

Responsible travel

Carry a reusable bottle, take your trash back, and respect local rules on plastic bans in the hills.
