Rajasthan itinerary: 10 to 14 days

Rajasthan is India at its most cinematic: hilltop forts, desert dunes, lake palaces and bazaars bursting with colour. This route works best with a car and driver.

12-day route

  1. Jaipur (3 nights): Amber Fort, City Palace, bazaars. Guide
  2. Pushkar (1 night): lake ghats and sunset. Guide
  3. Jodhpur (2 nights): Mehrangarh and the blue city. Guide
  4. Jaisalmer (2 nights): golden fort and a desert camp. Guide
  5. Back via Jodhpur to Ranakpur (1 night): Jain temples; Kumbhalgarh Fort.
  6. Udaipur (3 nights): lakes and palaces. Guide

Fly home from Udaipur or connect via Delhi/Mumbai. Add Agra at the start for the Taj, or Ranthambore for tigers.

Tips

  • Long drives (5-6 hours) are part of the experience: break them with stepwells and village stops.
  • Stay in heritage havelis and palace hotels; they’re a highlight.
  • October to March is best. Nights in the desert are cold in December to January.
